It's never too late to learn. Every year many adults return to learning to facilitate a career change, improve promotion prospects, gain a Degree or return to work after a break. We welcome applications from mature students at HRC, and feel they are an essential part of the College community.
It may be possible for mature students to gain credit for previous study. If you think your studies or work experience may be relevant please discuss this with us – you could gain your qualification in a shorter period. We will support you in gathering appropriate evidence to help you progress swiftly into Higher Education.
If you don’t have the entry requirements for a degree, our Access to Higher Education Pathways will open the door to Higher Education programmes.
ACCESS TO HIGHER EDUCATION – PATHWAYS
The Access to Higher Education Pathways are designed for adults who may have no formal qualifications and would like to progress to a degree or other Higher Education qualifications. The courses build confidence by providing study and research skills alongside subjects to each pathway.
An Access Certificate is the equivalent of three A Levels. In addition to core subjects such as communications, numeracy, IT and research skills you will study optional subjects such as english literature, sociology, history and psychology.
You can study in two ways – full-time over one year or part-time (day or evening) over two years. The minimum age requirement is 19 years. When you apply, we will invite you to come to the College to discuss the course in more detail in order to ensure it will meet your aspirations.
Programmes include:
- Access to Art and Design
- Access to Business and Computing
- Access to English and Humanities
- Access to Nursing and Health
- Access to Science
- Access to Social Studies
- Access to Teaching

The centre will also be used as a training venue for employers.
Our higher level course options include:
FOUNDATION DEGREES
Foundation Degrees are new, work-related Higher Education qualifications. They emphasise Work-based Learning, and concentrate on the development of employability skills, personal and professional development. Our Foundation Degrees have been developed in partnership with local industry. They take account of the needs of the local and regional labour market and are likely to open up real employment or career progression opportunities for you. Foundation Degrees enable progression to the final year of an Honours Degree at University.
