HOW DO APPRENTICSHIPS WORK?

FUNDING

Apprenticeship programmes are Government funded for candidates who satisfy the eligibility criteria detailed below.

Candidates must be:

  • in appropriate full-time employment
  • aged between 16-24 years old

Current employees and young people entering employment for the first time can take up Apprenticeships. Programmes involve induction into their job role and the provision of regular on the job training.

An apprentice’s time will be split generally between one day a week at college and the rest of the week in the workplace.

The apprentice will be assessed in their normal working setting, performing familiar tasks to gain a nationally recognised qualification, which reflects the skills and knowledge to do the job effectively.

WHAT COMMITMENT WILL AN EMPLOYER NEED TO MAKE?

They will provide support and opportunities for the apprentice to develop their skills and experience, and provide evidence to the qualification standards. They are also responsible for the wages of the apprentice.

An apprentice’s time will be split generally between one day a week at college and the rest of the week in the workplace.
